made from the mid-1950s until the 1970s. Hammer also produced science fiction, thrillers and Film Noir.

During its most successful years, Hammer dominated the horror film market.

Hammer’s elegant and erotic interpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula was an even bigger success than The Curse of Frankenstein. Christopher Lee starred as the vampire, opposite Peter Cushing as Van Hesling.

No One Who Saw It Lived To Describe It! so said the promotional posters that advertised this Hammer film, which was the first of the British Gothic horrors for which Hammer will forever be associated. Curse of Frankenstein was the first British Horror film to be made in colour, and stars Peter Cushing as Dr Frankenstein and Valerie Gaunt as his doomed mistress Justine whilst Christopher Lee is the monster.

Frankenstein Created Woman starring Peter Cushing and Susan Denberg is a grim fairy tale with undertones of both a theological and psychological bent. On its release it was scheduled to be supported by Prehistoric Women later to be known as Slave Girls but as this film was delayed The Mummy’s Shroud was the support film.

Set in London's Chelsea of the early 1970's, Johnny Alucard organises a black magic ceremony in a desolate churchyard. The culmination of the ritual is however the rejuvenation of Count Dracula from shrivelled remains.

Alucard lures victims to the graveyard for his masters pleasure and one is Jessica Van Hesling a descendant of the legendary vampire hunter, and the age old battle between good and evil ensues.

The final feature to be filmed by Hammer at The Bray Studios. The Mummy's Shroud tells of an expedition in search of a fabled tomb of the boy Pharoah Kah-to-Bey but their progress is is stalled by a self proclaimed keeper of the tomb who warns them entry will lead to their deaths.
